When you are planning your Tucson maternity session in, you are probably picturing that gorgeous hands-on-belly shot. And yes, we are absolutely getting that one! But some of my clients’ most loved images are the ones they never even knew they wanted. The quiet moment with their partner. The tiny detail that captures everything about this season. The movement shot that makes them feel like an absolute goddess.
Let me walk you through the five photos I make sure to capture at every maternity session here in Tucson and Oro Valley, and why each one deserves a permanent spot in your gallery.
And before we get into it, can I share something a little personal? I have been exactly where you are. With my son, I never got maternity photos taken and I genuinely regret it. The only photo I have from that pregnancy is a random snapshot at a U of A football game, giant belly, backwards hat, totally candid. Not exactly what I would have chosen.
With my daughter I did hire a professional photographer, but I waited until the very last minute. In August. In Tucson. I was absolutely sweating, swollen, and ready to be done. I wish so much that I had booked earlier, both to beat the heat and to capture that time before I was so far along. I share that because I want you to have what I wish I had. These five photos are a big part of that.
Yes, we are getting this one and yes, it is going to be gorgeous. The classic bump portrait is a timeless image for a reason. There is something so powerful about seeing a mama cradling her belly, whether she is looking right into the camera with full confidence or looking down at her bump in this quiet, tender moment.
What I love about this shot is how many variations we can create from it. A profile silhouette with beautiful light wrapping around you. Eyes closed, hands on belly, completely in the moment. Or a more editorial look with you owning the camera. No two bump portraits look the same because no two mamas are the same.
And if you are someone who feels awkward posing or does not know what to do with your hands, please do not worry. Guiding you through every single moment is literally my job and I genuinely love it. You do not have to figure any of this out on your own.

I want to tell you something about partner photos. The mamas who are on the fence about including them almost always end up saying these are their absolute favorites. The foreheads together, the hands layered on the belly, the genuine laughter mid-pose. These are the images that end up on the nursery wall.
One of my favorite things to do during this part of the session is ask dad what his reaction was when he found out he was going to be a father. I have asked this question more times than I can count and it gets a genuine laugh every single time. Not a polite chuckle either. A real, surprised, caught-off-guard laugh. And that moment right there? That is the shot. That is the one that tells the real story of your relationship and this season you are in together.
If your partner is camera shy or convinced they are not photogenic, I hear that a lot and I promise we will take good care of them. The goal is never to make anyone feel like they are performing. It is to create a space where real moments can actually happen.

This is the one. The flowy dress, the loose waves, and if we are really lucky, the wind showing up exactly when we need it. Wind is honestly one of my best friends on a session and out here in Tucson we get some beautiful breezy moments, especially at locations like the lavender fields or up on Mt. Lemmon.
There is something about a movement shot that transforms the energy of a session. One second a mama is feeling a little self-conscious and the next second her dress is catching the wind, her hair is moving, and she looks like she belongs on the cover of a magazine. I have seen it happen over and over and it never gets old.
For these shots, flowy fabrics are everything. Chiffon, lightweight linen, anything that catches air and moves with you. I always recommend having at least one flowy dress in your outfit lineup specifically for this reason. Your stylist can help you nail this down during your pre-session styling appointment too.
If you have a little one at home who is about to become a big brother or big sister, please please please bring them to your maternity session. I cannot stress this enough. Some of my absolute favorite images from any session I have ever shot have come from including siblings, and the moments we capture are ones you will treasure for the rest of your life.
My two favorite things to ask kids to do during a Tucson maternity session: point at baby brother or baby sister, and give the baby a kiss right on mama’s belly. That is it. Those two things. And what happens in those moments is something you genuinely cannot plan or pose your way into. The concentration on a toddler’s face as they point at the belly with one tiny finger. The way a big sibling leans in so carefully to give that kiss. It is the sweetest thing and it photographs like an absolute dream every single time.
These images also become incredibly meaningful as your kids grow up. One day you will be able to show your children a photo of the moment they first met, before their sibling even arrived. That is not just a pretty picture. That is a story worth telling over and over again.

Between all the intentional shots, I am always watching for the ones that just happen. The laugh you did not plan. The look your partner gives you when they think the camera is pointed somewhere else. The quiet second where you both just breathe and take it all in.
These are the images that tend to make mamas cry when they see their gallery for the first time. Not because they are technically perfect, but because they are true. They capture something that was actually happening and that you might not even have been aware of in the moment.
A big part of my job is creating enough ease and laughter during a session that these moments have room to happen naturally. That is why I ask the questions I ask, why I keep things relaxed and fun, and why I am always paying attention even when it looks like I am just chatting with you.

Since I am a Tucson girl through and through and I learned this lesson the hard way, I have to say it: please do not wait too long to book your maternity session. I recommend booking about two months out and scheduling your Tucson maternity session before the third trimester heat really sets in. The Tucson summer is no joke and you deserve to feel beautiful and comfortable, not sweaty and ready to be done.
As far as locations go, I shoot all over the Tucson and Oro Valley area including Honeybee Canyon, Mt. Lemmon, Sonoita, and my studio. A lot of my maternity clients absolutely love the lavender fields, and honestly I understand completely because they are stunning. Just know that peak blooming is usually the first two weeks of June and it does depend on the rain that year. If you have your heart set on lavender, reach out to me before you finalize your date and we will make sure the timing lines up.
These five types of images work together to tell the complete story of this season during your Tucson maternity session. The iconic portrait. The partner connection. The movement shot. The big sibling moment. The real unplanned moment that sneaks up on you. Together they give you something to hang on the wall, something to put in an album, and something to show your child one day when you want them to know how loved they were before they even arrived.
You do not need to memorize a pose list or show up with a Pinterest folder full of references. That is my job and I genuinely love doing it. Your only job is to show up, soak in this season, and let me take care of the rest.
If you are starting to think about booking your Tucson maternity session, I would love to chat. Reach out anytime and let’s find the perfect timing, location, and plan for your family. And if you are eyeing those lavender fields, do not wait too long. They go fast and so does this season.

If you’ve ever had a dog, you know they’re more than just pets—they’re family. They see you at your best and your worst and love you through it all. That was my sweet Chipis, my stubborn, adventurous, and fiercely loyal Shiba Inu. Saying goodbye to her this past month was one of the hardest things […]

During a vibrant photo session at Sweetwater Wetlands Park, the Latorre family, including twins and a younger brother, embraced the outdoors, allowing their natural interactions to shine through in every capture. The park’s lush scenery and serene atmosphere paired with the family’s soft-toned outfits offered a perfect setting. Despite some challenges with sunlight, the photographer’s skill ensured beautiful results, capturing genuine, joyful moments that the family will cherish as memories.
