Everyone talks about fall family photos. The golden leaves, the cozy sweaters, the warm tones. And listen, fall is beautiful. But here in Arizona, there is a window in early June that does something fall simply cannot do. Fields of purple lavender stretching out as far as you can see, soft light filtering through oak trees, the smell of lavender in the air, and if you are really lucky, a butterfly landing right in your frame.
Lavender field family portraits near Tucson are one of the most magical things I get to photograph every year. And they are also one of the most missed opportunities I see, because the window is short, the dates go fast, and too many families find out about it after the blooms are already gone.
So let me tell you everything you need to know.
I shoot lavender field family sessions at Life Under the Oaks Lavender Farm in Oracle, Arizona, about an hour from Tucson. Oracle is this charming little mountain town where the desert meets the mountains and the temperatures are genuinely cooler than down in the valley. The farm itself is a family-owned property set under 100-year-old oak trees, with rows of lavender that bloom every June and a boutique full of lavender products that your family will absolutely want to explore before or after your session.
The second location I love for summer family sessions is Aravaipa Farms in Winkelman, Arizona. This one is a little farther out but absolutely worth it. Aravaipa Farms is an orchard and inn with over 900 trees that get lush and green in the summer months. The property sits along a running creek that we are allowed to use during sessions, which honestly changes everything when you are photographing families in Arizona summer heat. Imagine your kids splashing in a creek, surrounded by green orchard trees, in a setting that looks nothing like the desert most people picture when they think of Arizona.
It is stunning and I have not yet had a full session there in summer which means it is still a hidden gem waiting to happen.
There is something that happens during a lavender session that I cannot fully explain until you see your photos. When the outfits are right, and the light is soft, and the lavender is at its peak purple, everything just clicks. I have been doing this since 2017 and I still get that feeling during lavender sessions where I look at the back of my camera and think I feel like the best photographer on the planet right now. Not because of anything I did, but because the location does so much of the heavy lifting.
The color palette alone is something no other season can replicate. Soft purples, sage greens, warm creams, the dusty tones of the Arizona landscape in the background. It is soft and airy and timeless in a way that does not feel dated five years later. These are not photos that scream a specific trend or a specific year. They just look beautiful.
And then there are the butterflies. I am always a little shocked when they show up, but they do, regularly. There is nothing quite like getting the shot you planned and then a butterfly decides to photobomb your family portrait. Those are the images that end up on the wall.

Let me be real with you because I think honesty is important here. June in Arizona is hot. Even in Oracle, which is cooler than Tucson, you are going to feel the sun. I always tell my lavender session families to come prepared with water, dress in breathable fabrics, and to know that we will work quickly and intentionally to make the most of the best light.
I had a session in late July in Tucson one year where by the end of it, dad had visible sweat stains and mom was swollen from the heat and completely done. They still loved their photos because the daughters had a blast playing and we made it work, and they even ended up with a beautiful album. But I will be honest, that session reminded me why timing and location matter so much. The lavender fields in Oracle are a different experience entirely because of the elevation and the trees and the fact that we are not shooting on asphalt in the middle of a Tucson afternoon.
And if heat is a real concern for your family, Aravaipa Farms with that running creek is genuinely a game changer. Kids who are hot and grumpy become kids who are laughing and splashing, and that energy shows up in every single photo.
Here is the most important thing I can tell you about lavender field family portraits near Tucson: the peak bloom window is usually the first two weeks of June, and it depends heavily on the rain that year. Some years it is spectacular. Some years it is shorter than expected. The lavender does not check a calendar and it does not wait for families who are still thinking about it.
I have had families reach out every year who missed the window entirely. They either did not sign up for my newsletter, skipped over my Instagram stories about lavender availability, or waited until they felt ready to book and by then the blooms were already past peak. It breaks my heart every time because I know how much they wanted it.
If you have your heart set on lavender, please reach out to me before you finalize anything. I keep a close eye on the bloom progress each year and I can help you time it right. The families who get the best lavender sessions are the ones who book early, stay flexible on the exact date, and trust me to give them the green light when the timing is perfect.
My calendar opens by season and lavender session spots are some of the first to go. This year I am transitioning away from mini sessions and offering full sessions at the lavender fields and orchard locations, which means more time, more variety, and a more relaxed experience for your family.
The best way to make sure you do not miss out is to get on my email list. I send early access to newsletter subscribers before spots open to the public, and lavender dates are always the first ones claimed. I also share bloom updates on Instagram as June gets closer so you can follow along and know when the window is looking good.
Every session includes my professional fashion stylist who will help your whole family coordinate outfits for the lavender palette specifically. Soft purples, creamy whites, sage greens, warm neutrals, she knows exactly what photographs beautifully in that setting and she will make sure you show up feeling confident and ready.
I book about two months in advance and for lavender specifically I strongly recommend reaching out as early as possible. If you are already thinking about it, now is the right time to get in touch.
Lavender field family portraits near Tucson are one of a kind. There is no other backdrop in Arizona that looks like this, no other window in the year where these colors exist, and no recreating it once the blooms are gone. The families who discover lavender sessions tend to come back every time the calendar opens because once you see those photos, nothing else quite compares.
If you want to be one of the families in the lavender fields this June, reach out now. Tell me your family size, your ideal timing, and whether you are drawn more to the lavender farm in Oracle or the lush orchard and creek at Aravaipa Farms in Winkelman. I would love to help you plan something truly beautiful.
And if you want first access when my summer dates drop, sign up for my newsletter below. The blooms will not wait and neither will the spots.
My son turns 11 today Eleven. I honestly do not know how that happened. During COVID, when the world had completely stopped and we were all just home together with nowhere to go and nothing to do, I took his portrait. He was little. He had that look on his face that only kids have, […]
